again, though it's ancient history to me, not being impartial or scientific. but like, the feeling when microsoft, esri, and amazon whitelabeled mapbox tech isn't that much different from the feeling of maplibre being funded by microsoft & amazon and trumpeted as more pure/oss/indie
i also don't think it's that much of a victory for the future of oss map tech to be paid for my aws, microsoft, amazon, and meta instead of by a medium-sized independent company focused on maps opencollective.com/maplibre over time, maplibre is becoming its own thing, things like the MLT add to that. but a big part of the reason why mapbox went closed-source was because companies were just whitelabeling all of the (expensively-written, very hard to figure out) technology and calling it their own
i'm too close to this topic to be impartial, but the story of 'replacing mapbox with open source solutions, being free of the bad company' always feels hollow when the open source solutions are just mapbox tech. like 7/10 top human contributors to maplibre are mapbox github.com/maplibre/map...
